The faces and voices mixed together like paint on a pallet. She could hear their thoughts and see their screams, forging a magnificent masterpiece in the still air of the waiting room. She paced and wondered vaguely about the headless torso she found in the street. The nurse walked up and put a gentle hand on her arm.
“We’re screening for trauma here,” she said. “Please wait in line.”
